False-colour infrared image of Isola Stromboli, made by an aircraft-mounted Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS). Isola Stromboli is located about 60km north of the island of Sicily. At centre is the crater of the volcano Stomboli. The various colours represent different thermal emissivity of the surface material. The pink areas around the crater are volcanic ash, whilst the dark blue and red areas are old lava flows. The yellow and green areas are vegetated. The brown area at right is the town of San Vincenzo | |
