Artist's impression of the mythological city state of Atlantis. The existence of a technologically advanced state on an island in the Atlantic is a myth derived from a story told to the Greek explorer Solon in 590 BC by an Egyptian priest. It described an island rich beyond imagination, with temples embellished with gold, silver, copper and ivory. The island reputedly suffered mighty earthquakes and floods, and sank into the ocean. Many modern authorities link this legend with an early Minoan settlement on Santorini, just north of Crete. Most of the island was destroyed in a vast volcanic eruption in 1470 BC,and there is some evidence of a large city having been there | |
