Artwork depicting the Bezymianny volcano, before and after the explosive eruption of 1956. The current shape of the volcano is shown, with a grey patch indicating its original shape. The volcano, located in the Kamchatka Peninsula of eastern Russia, was thought to be dormant until its eruption on 22 October 1955. Minor eruptions continued for months until the top of the volcano exploded on 30 March 1956. The cloud of ash from the eruption reached an altitude of 35 kilometres, some rocks being hurled 25 km into the air. Fortunately, the volcano is in an almost uninhabited region, and no-one was killed. NB The name of the volcano may be changed in the caption depending on the original Russian spelling | |
