The caldera of Mt Tambora on Sumbawa Island,Indonesia,as seen from the space shuttle. The caldera is 6km wide and 650 metres deep and was formed in 1815 as a result of a huge volcanic explosion. Gases from the eruption were ejected high into Earth's atmosphere & transported around the globe, producing an abnormally cold summer in 1816,"the year without a summer". The photograph was taken from the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-26 mission in September- October 1988 | |
