Parkfield earthquake prediction experiment. Rich Liechti,a U.S. Geological Survey technician, checks one of the 13 creepmeters placed at Parkfield,Central California. Seismologists have predicted that an earthquake of around magnitude 6 will occur on the San Andreas fault at Parkfield before 1993. Dozens of researchers have made the village the most heavily instrumented earthquake region in the world. Creepmeters can detect ground movements of only 0.02mm and as such may give the first warning of the predicted quake. They consist of wires, fixed at one end, which pass through underground pipes aligned close to the fault to sensors | |
