Seismic fault in Iceland. A fault line is a region of the Earth's crust where two plates of rock move relative to each other. Where the two plates are moving away from one another at a divergent boundary,a crack or fissure is created in the surface of the Earth called a rift. In Iceland, the rift is created by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. These plates are moving away from one another at the rate of 2 centimetres per year. Evidence of the movement can be seen in this image, where the iron railing has been pulled into two separate pieces by the movement of the earth beneath it | |
