Sea floor off New Jersey. High-definition coloured sonar image of the continental slope off the coast of New Jersey,Delaware and Maryland,USA. This most detailed mapping of the Atlantic seafloor off the North American coast was conducted by ships recording sound echos from the ocean bottom. Colours show depths of the ocean floor: white (near sea level),orange (1000 metres),yellow (2000 m),green (2500 m). On this continental incline, deep submarine canyons extending towards the ocean have been cut by underwater avalanches. These sediments were brought into this region by ocean currents and waves over geologic time | |
