Chalk cliffs formed by coastal erosion. Chalk is a rock that is composed of the fossilised remains of the skeletons of microscopic marine animals, and so consists largely of calcium carbonate. The beds of chalk will have originated under a prehistoric ocean. Changes in sea level and slow movements in the Earth's crust raised the chalk, exposing it to wave action erosion by the sea.
