Pancake ice. This free-floating ice is circular to polygonal in shape. It is 30-300 cm in diameter and up to 10cm thick. It forms on the surface of very cold open water covered with surface slush (frazil ice). Individual pieces of pancake ice often have raised rims formed when pieces strike against each other and slush splashes freeze at their edges | |
