Stein glacier. Front (snout) of the Stein glacier in the Susten Pass,Berner Oberland,Switzerland. This glacier is 4.3 kilometres long, beginning at an altitude of 3500 metres and flowing down to 1940 metres. Warming after the last ice age led the glacier to retreat, and it left a proglacial lake called the Steinsee,or Stein lake. This lake has flooded in the past after heavy rains,in 1956 and 1998. The lake has been used as a retention basin by a hydroelectric power station since the 1950s | |
