Glacier edge. Edge of Pine Island Glacier,Antarctica. The glacier is at top left, with sea ice and open water (blue) at bottom and right. This is the calving front of the glacier. As a glacier arrives at the coast it becomes less stable, cracks develop and the glacier weakens. This can result in huge chunks of ice falling into the sea (calving),forming icebergs.
