Arolla Glacier. Early morning sunlight on crumpled ice, part of the Arolla Glacier (also known as the Bas d'Arolla Glacier). This glacier is in the Alps in the Valais area of Switzerland. A glacier is a river of ice that flows downhill under its own weight. This weight crumples the ice and forms these large mounds and cracks. The ice grinds over rock as it flows downhill, eroding the landscape and carrying rock debris with it. The rock debris turns the ice this grey colour. The ice forms from snow that falls high in the mountains. It melts when it reaches the lower (terminal) end of the glacier. The Arolla Glacier is a small glacier, only 1.5 kilometres long | |
