Findelen Glacier. Ridges of rock (lateral moraine) either side of the Findelen Glacier. This glacier is in the Valais area of Switzerland,in the Swiss Alps. A glacier is a river of ice that flows downhill under its own weight. The ice grinds over rock as it flows downhill, eroding the landscape and carrying rock debris to lower levels. Some of the rock is squeezed out on either side of the glacier to form lateral moraines. The ice forms from snow that falls high in the mountains. It melts when it reaches the lower (terminal) end of the glacier. This glacier is 7 kilometres long, flowing from an elevation of 3800 metres to 2500 metres | |
