Dirty iceberg. View of an iceberg in the sea by the terminal wall of a glacier. This iceberg contains some black ice, probably as a result of it being formed from a glacier which had picked up soil and rock on its way to the sea. As glaciers reach the sea, large chunks of ice break off the terminal wall, forming icebergs in a process known as calving. Icebergs formed in this manner are known as calves. This is one of the main processes leading to the formation of icebergs. This is the Ilulissat icefjord,Greenland | |
