MODEL RELEASED. Ice core research. Scientist with equipment that contains a sample of air which has been extracted from an Antarctic ice core. The sample has been cooled by liquid nitrogen. The air bubbles in the ice were released by crushing the core. Analysis of the air's chemical composition, including the levels of those gases that cause the greenhouse effect, can reveal details of the climate in the past. Cores are taken by drilling into ice formed from snow that fell in successive layers over thousands of years.
