Ice core being handled in a cold room. The ice core will be crushed so that the tiny bubbles of air trapped within it are released. The air is analysed for the concentration of gases within it,and the exact type of atomic nuclei (isotopes) that comprise them. The chemical composition of the atmosphere, including the levels of those gases that cause the greenhouse effect, can reveal details of the climate in the past. This ice core was taken by drilling into ice formed from snow which fell on Antarctica in successive layers over thousands of years.
