MODEL RELEASED. Ice core. Scientist in a cold room handles an ice core. The ice core will be crushed so that the tiny bubbles of air within it are released. The released air is analysed for the concentration of gases within it,and the exact type of atomic nuclei (isotopes) that comprise them. The atmosphere's chemical composition, including the levels of those gases that cause the greenhouse effect, can reveal details of the climate in the past. This ice core was taken by drilling into ice formed from snow which fell on Antarctica over thousands of years.
