Climate change researcher. Scientist analysing meltwater taken from an ice core sample from the Antarctic. She is working in a clean room and is wearing protective clothing to minimise the risk of contamination. Chemical analysis of ice cores can reveal changes in climate. Air trapped in the firn (the upper layer of frozen snow) is untainted by the atmospheric air,and thus provides direct evidence of what the composition of the atmosphere was at the time when the firn froze. Studying how the atmosphere has changed can lead to better models for predicting how it will change in the future | |
