Antarctic research ship. Royal Research Ship (RRS) James Clark Ross leaving Rothera Research Station,Antarctica. This ship is designed for use in polar waters,and can travel through solid sea ice over a metre thick. It is a dedicated scientific research vessel,and contains chemical,biological and physical science laboratories. Sensors continuously measure the properties of the water around the ship,and it also has several sensors that can be lowered deeper into the water. It has sample nets that can cope with a wide variety of catches,from plankton to large squid. Photographed in January 1998 | |
