Antarctica. Infrared satellite image of Antarc- tica, the continent at the Earth's south pole. The image is oriented with the Greenwich Meridian at top. In the infrared range snow is white, ice is white/blue,and exposed rock is black. Antarctica is generally covered with plains of ice and snow, but the Transantarctic mountains appear at lower centre. Ice shelves project from much of the coastline, the largest being the Ross (to the left of the Transantarctic Mountains) and the Ronne (at upper left). Antarctica is the fifth largest of the world's continents. Image taken by a Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor aboard a NOAA satellite | |
