Enhanced-colour satellite mosaic of Antarctica. The image is oriented with the prime (Greenwich) meridian to the right. The colours have been enhanced to accentuate the large-scale structure of the ice cover over the continent, seen here with its permanent ice. Most of the ice seen here covers land, with the exception of the Ross Ice Shelf (brown tint below centre) and the Ronne Ice Shelf (purple tint left of centre). Just below centre is the line of the Transantarctic Mountains. The permanent ice cover is over 3000 metres thick near the centre of the continent, and covers a total area of over 12.5 million square kilometres | |
