Seal hunt. Inuit hunter lying in wait for a ringed seal to appear from a breathing hole in the ice. He is wearing polar bear fur over his legs and boots, known as kamiks ,made from seal skin. The hunter uses a rifle which is mounted on a wooden sled. He crawls along the ice until he is close enough to shoot. Melting ice and receding glaciers caused by global warming is altering the subsistence lifestyle of many Inuit people and the animals they hunt. Photographed in Qaanaaq,Greenland,in 2006 | |
