Greenland ice sheet. Aerial view of the edge of the Greenland ice sheet. This ice sheet covers the entire area surrounding the North Pole. The extent of the sheet is determined by the seasons, but a large amount of the most northern areas is always covered. Here, the ice sheet can be seen stretching far into the distance at upper frame. Where the ice sheet meets the water,it extends over it,forming an ice shelf. Parts of this shelf break off occasionally, forming icebergs such as those seen at centre right | |
