Weather balloon. Zeppelin-shaped tethered weather balloon. The balloon, which is filled with helium,is tethered to a winch on the ground. Hanging just below the balloon is an instrument for recording carbon dioxide levels and a radio transmitter. The balloon is released to a height of 1 kilometre. As it ascends it sends its measurements back to a base station via the radio transmitter. Conditions must be almost windless for successful tethered balloon experiments. The measurements will be used to study global warming. Photographed at the Arctic Research Centre,Sodankyla,Finnish Lapland | |
