Ozone measurement. Scientist taking readings from a Dobson spectrophotometer, which is used to measure ozone gas levels in the atmosphere. This instrument analyses the spectrum of incoming sunlight. Ozone,a form of oxygen, absorbs high- energy ultraviolet (UV) light, the component of sunlight that causes sunburn and skin cancer. The higher the UV levels, the lower the ozone content of the atmosphere. As ozone levels fall due to pollution,UV levels are predicted to increase.
