Meteorologist with a weather balloon. This design of balloon is called a 'Jimsphere',after its inventor Jim Scoggins. The spherical shape of the balloon is maintained by a relatively high internal pressure; normal flexible balloons adopt a pear-shape which is less stable in flight. The stability of the Jimsphere is further enhanced by four hundred conical projections on its surface. The balloon carries instruments for measuring temperature and humidity (data which are transmitted to the ground) and is tracked visually or by radar to assess wind velocity. This balloon was photographed at the European Space Agency's Ariane launch site in French Guiana | |
