An ozone research station on Spitsbergen. Concern over the depletion of the ozone layer above the Antarctic has led to similar worries about the Arctic. This research station was set up to monitor the levels of ozone and chlorine compounds in the upper atmosphere. The station also monitors the formation of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs). These are thought to be the site of ozone destruction by chemicals derived from man-made chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Spitsbergen is one of the islands in the Svalbard chain, located some 800km north of Norway | |
