Storm drainage pumping station. This is the Tidal Basin Pumping Station at London's Royal Docks,UK. It is designed to pump surface water (not sewage) out of the dock area into the River Thames. This prevents the area flooding in times of storm and heavy rainfall, and also prevents the water in the large, enclosed docks from contamination by water running off the surrounding area. Drains bring the surface water to this station, which pumps it out at 8000 litres per second. Increased drainage was required by the continuing redevelopment of the area from docklands to residential and commercial buildings. The Tidal Basin Pumping Station, built in 1988,was designed by Richard Rogers | |
