The Thames Flood Barrier,Woolwich,London. Officially opened in 1984,the project took 8 years to complete and cost nearly #500 million. The barrier consists of 10 moveable D- shaped gates supported by 9 concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. The arm of one of the gates appears as the black,semi-circular object above the waterline. When not in use the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic | |
