The Thames Flood Barrier at Woolwich,London. Officially opened in 1984,the project took 8 years to complete and cost nearly #500 million. Spanning the river, the barrier consists of 10 moveable D-shaped gates (the black,semi-circular structures visible above the water line) supported by 9 concrete piers. The piers contain the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. When not in use,the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic | |
