Tornado damage to a house in Stoughton,Wisconsin,USA,in August 2005. The entire upper part of the house has been ripped away, revealing its foundations and basements. Wisconsin,in the US Midwest,is at the north end of the so-called Tornado Alley, the region of the central USA that is most susceptible to tornadoes. A tornado is a rapidly rotating vortex of air that typically forms in an intense thunderstorm. It can produce winds of over 500 kilometres per hour, which can cause immense damage. Tornados tend to be small, localised systems, however, often totally destroying one house while leaving its neighbours relatively unscathed | |
