Typhoon 12W. Satellite image of the typhoon 12W or Man-Yi,located near the Bonin Islands in the Pacific Ocean. A typhoon is a tropical revolving storm that occurs in the western Pacific and in the China Seas. Typhoons are known as hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean,and cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. At the time this image was taken,the winds in 12W were gusting at speeds of around 259 kilometres per hour. The storm was moving in a north-easterly direction,towards Japan's main island of Honshu,at a speed of around 7.5 kilometres per hour.
