Hurricane Fran. Computer three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction,based on satellite data,of hurri- cane Fran over the Caribbean Sea. The island of Cuba (at lower left) and the state of Florida,USA,(at upper left) are also seen. The hurricane is the swirl of white clouds surrounding a central "eye" (at upper right). The "eye" is comprised of relatively calm,cloud-free air at a very low pressure. Around this "eye" are heavily-clouded,windy areas. Hurricane Fran came ashore in North Carolina (at top centre),USA,on 5 September 1996. It had winds reaching 190 kilometres per hour,delivered 36 centimetres of rain and killed 34 people.
