Lightning during a thunderstorm. Lightning is an electrical discharge from a cloud to the ground or from cloud to cloud. Build-up of charge is probably due to rapid movement of water droplets and ice particles within the cloud. Electricity flows briefly along a path of highly ionised air molecules. The visible flash is the result of a huge flow of energy returning back up this path to the cloud. Photographed in Finland | |
