Lightning. Lightning bolt strikes a skyscraper in Singapore. Lightning occurs when a large, electrical charge builds up in a cloud, because of the movement of ice & water particles within it. This charge induces an opposite charge in the ground. These charges create an ionised path in the air. Electricity rapidly passes through this pathway, usually from the cloud to the ground. This discharge creates bright light and high temperatures. Skyscrapers are often hit by lightning because their shape concentrates the electric field around them. Buildings can be prot- ected by fitting a lightning conductor,a metal wire that carries the electricity to the ground | |
