Sundog. This optical atmospheric effect is caused when light from the Sun or Moon is refracted by ice crystals in the air. Usually one sundog appears on either side of the Sun or Moon. Sundogs,also called parhelia or mock suns,may be white or colourful,as here. Parhelia often occur in conjunction with haloes,and usually form when thin layers of high-level cirrus clouds are present.
