| Mirage. Image of the mirage of an island. The real island is seen suspended in air and the mirage is situated below it. The mirage is more easily seen at centre where a tiny portion of the lighthouse is seen inverted. Mirages are optical phenomenon in which distant objects may be seen inverted,as if mirrored,and suspended in mid air. They occur when adjacent layers of air with different temperatures,densities and consequently refractivities lie close to the ground or water.
