Mirage. Image of the mirage of an island. The real island is in the background whereas the mirage is seen inverted below it: the mirage is more easily seen on the horizon at centre left. In the mirage the lighthouse has also disappeared. Mirages are optical phenomenon in which distant objects may be seen inverted,as if mirrored, and suspended in mid-air. They occur when adjacent layers of air with different temperatures, densities and consequently refractivities lie close to the ground or water. They may be seen in steady atmospheric conditions when these layers are not mixed by turbulent motions | |
