Cirrus uncinus cloud. Forming in the freezing temperatures above 5000 metres,cirrus clouds are composed of ice crystals that are then blown by high altitude winds into wispy shapes. If additionally there are other strong winds below the ice crystals,then as they fall they will be blown into the characterstic hook shape of cirrus uncinus. Extensive banks of cirrus clouds indicate high-level moisture,and hence an approaching frontal system. Photographed in north Finland | |
