Lenticular cloud. This cloud is seen over mountains and mountain ranges,as it forms due to winds blowing over peaks. This leads to the formation of standing waves of air on the sheltered (lee) side of the mountains. If the air is moist, water condenses out at the tops (crests) of the waves, forming the clouds. Due to their unusual shape, they have been mistaken for UFOs in the past. Photographed on Mauna Kea,Hawaii,USA | |
