Cirrus clouds. Wispy strands of cirrus cloud. Cirrus clouds are found at high altitudes, typically above 5000 metres. They consist of tiny ice crystals. The characteristically wispy shapes of the cirrus clouds are produced as these ice crystals are blown by strong winds. A bank of cirrus clouds may indicate an approaching weather front.
