Iridescent altocumulus clouds. This phenomenon, known as irisation, may be seen in the sky in association with thin layers of clouds, typically cirrus or altocumulus. The colours are due to the diffraction of sunlight passing through the water droplets in the clouds. The irisation often follows the shape of the cloud and may be observed only close to the Sun (centre frame) | |
