Aurora borealis,1604. Anonymous engraving of the aurora borealis,or northern lights, over the town of Augsburg,Germany,in 1604. In the early hours of the morning,"blood red" clouds were observed in the eastern sky, from which streamed light as bright as sunlight, and fiery beams, like lightning. The aurora lasted two hours and is said to have been observed by soldiers on watch and other honourable people. The phenomenon is usually seen near the poles and is caused by the collision of charged particles from the Sun with gas molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere | |
