North Atlantic depression. Coloured satellite image of a low pressure frontal system over the North Atlantic Ocean. The system is the swirling mass of clouds (at centre). Low level clouds are shown as yellow, high level clouds as white. Lines of longitude and latitude have been superimposed on the image,as have coastlines. Great Britain,France,Spain and Portugal may be seen at lower right. At top centre are Iceland & Greenland. In a low pressure system the air pressure decreases towards the centre of the spiral of clouds. These systems are often caused when a mass of warm air is forced upwards by cold air. Low pressure systems are associated with unsettled weather | |
