Reflectivity of polluted ice. Artwork showing icebergs failing to reflect the Sun's light due to pollution by soot. The soot (airborne particles from burning fossil fuels) travels far from their source on air currents. The accumulation of soot particles on the ice lowers its albedo, the intensity with which it reflects the sun's light. When less sunlight is reflected into space, more is absorbed into the oceans and land. This raises the overall Earth temperature and fuels melting of the ice and lowers the albedo further | |
