Greenhouse effect. Artwork depicting the green- house effect which causes global warming. Incoming sunlight (yellow) is either reflected or absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and surface. This absorption heats the Earth's surface, which then releases this energy as infrared radiation (red). Most of the atmosphere's gases allow infrared radiation to pass back out into space. Some atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, reflect the infrared light and so trap heat in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide occurs naturally at low levels (at left). Increased carbon dioxide levels (at right) are caused by the burning of fossil fuels, such as petrol & coal,by industry & cars | |
