Greenhouse effect. A simple experiment demonstrates the effect of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide,on Earth's atmosphere. The bottles are a model of the Earth & its atmosphere. Sunlight pours in & warms the piece of brown card, which corresponds to the surface of the Earth. The card re-radiates this energy in the far infrared, but it is trapped both by the plastic and by the gases within each bottle. The bottles contain atmospheres of ordinary air (left),and carbon dioxide (CO2,right). The temperature in the CO2 bottle (as measured by the digital thermometer) is higher than in the bottle of air, demonstrating the effect of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas | |
