Earth's biosphere. Coloured satellite image of Earth's biosphere, showing the distribution of vegetation on land & phytoplankton in the oceans. The colours represent densities of green plant pigment (chlorophyll). Colours in the ocean range from red (most dense) through yellow, green & blue to purple (least dense); land colours range from dark green (most) through yellow to dark orange (least) on land. This image was acquired by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) on the OrbView 2 satellite during 4 September to 5 October 1997. SeaWiFS is the first satellite to continuously monitor the global biosphere, and its data should help with global climate research | |
