Earth. Satellite image of the Earth shown in flat projection. The colours approximate to natural tones. This image was acquired by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS),aboard the OrbView 2 satellite. SeaWiFS monitors the colour of the ocean to determine the concentration of tiny phytoplankton organisms in the water. SeaWiFS is the first instrument to do this in 10 years. It is also the first instrument to monitor the global biosphere continuously. The data from SeaWIFS should help with global climate research. It was launched on 1 August 1997. This image is a composite of data gathered during 18 September to 1 October 1997 | |
