First colour photograph of the whole Earth. This historic image was taken by the third Applications Technology Satellite (ATS-III) on 10 November 1967,from a point in geostationary orbit above Brazil. South America is seen quite clearly,as is the west coast of Africa (upper right) and part of North America (upper left). ATS-III was launched on 6 November 1967,and is still in orbit. The communications system of ATS-II was used to support the Apollo Moon landings in 1969-72. The camera on ATS-III was shut down on 14 January 1976,but the satellite is still used as a communications link for research bases and vessels in the Arctic and Antarctic | |
